History of Emirates Cable Car

On July 4, 2010, TfL presented proposals for a cable car across the River Thames. The first urban cable car in the United Kingdom was designed by Wilkinson Eyre, Expedition Engineering, and Buro Happold. The London Borough of Newham received an application for a 1,100-m (3,600-foot) cable car from North Greenwich Peninsula to Royal Victoria Dock in October 2010.

TfL's initial budget for the Emirates Cable Car in London, which would be privately funded, was £25 million. This figure had more than doubled by September 2011, when it reached £60 million. The Dubai-based airline Emirates stated in October 2011 that they will sponsor the cable car for ten years, spending £36 million and branding the cable car with the airline's name.

The Emirates Cable Car London opened to the public at noon on June 28, 2012, more than a month before the Olympic Games. According to TfL, the overall cost of the project was approximately £60 million, with £45 million spent on construction. In June 2012, the Emirates Airline Cable Car got featured on the London Underground map. It was the first one to be featured on the map with sponsor branding.
